Pattern reading workshop

Many good knitters feel bewildered when they look at a knitting pattern. The charts, the abbreviations, and terms can all seem mysterious to the uninitiated.

future dates tbc

1 class of 5 hours (£60*)

This class will help to familiarize you with the world of knitting patterns. We will look at:
  • Common abbreviations and their variations in American, British and other patterns
  • Making / getting gauge
  • Substituting yarns and needle sizes
  • Choosing the size to make
  • Following written directions and charts
  • Checking for errata
  • Construction methods
This class should prepare you for knitting from the pattern of your choice. Participants are welcome to bring along a pattern that they would like to knit from. Taught by Juju Vail.

"Like many knitters, I’ve always loved making things. As a child I couldn’t find anyone to teach me to knit or crochet so I worked it out from instruction books.

My first completed project was a crocheted Italian flag for a geography project, when I was nine. I’ve never looked back.

After studying fashion and knitwear design in Montreal, I began a business designing and making hand knits that sold across Canada and the United States.

In 1990, I came to the UK and did an MA in textile design at St. Martins. Since graduating, I have taught and written books on many textile practices.

Most recently I have been working with beads and published a book called Creative Beading.

I chronicle my creative passions daily on my blog, jujulovespolkadots. Currently, I am fascinated by altering new and vintage ready-made clothing and planning a book on that subject.

I am passionate about combining felted, knitted, and crocheted wool with glass beads. The results show a vibrancy of colour and contrast of textures like no other craft." *Please note price includes ball of yarn and a circular needle.
We will have double pointed needles on hand for you to use in the second class. Classes are held in the shop. Maximum of 7 students per class. 100% deposit is required at registration.
